At Twisted Turtle Studio, we are thrilled to introduce Maria, our Featured Artist of the Month! Maria’s journey from a successful career in Massachusetts to becoming a renowned jewelry artist in Phoenix, Arizona, is nothing short of inspiring.

After dedicating 25 years to her woman-owned business specializing in signs and vehicle lettering, Maria relocated to Phoenix, Arizona. However, the environment in Phoenix posed challenges that affected the quality and detail of her previous work, prompting her to explore a new career path. This led to the birth of SunStones of the Southwest!

"After making jewelry for friends, I started selling some basic designs on Etsy back when Etsy was first formed," Maria shares. "In 2010, I realized stringing beads was not creative enough for me. I took several classes in metalsmithing and practiced over the years, learning much. I work mostly with copper because of the versatility and the beauty of that metal. I sit at my bench with so many ideas that my hands don't seem to work fast enough to create all of those ideas. I especially love the primitive and rustic look of jewelry."

Maria's passion for creativity is matched by her dedication to animal advocacy. She has been actively involved in cat rescue, adopting and rescuing over 22 cats throughout the years. Additionally, Maria has cared for four parrots, two of whom, an African grey and a scarlet macaw, are still with her at the age of 27.

Her commitment to animal welfare extends to her volunteer work at Wild at Heart, an all-volunteer organization dedicated to the conservation and preservation of Arizona's native wildlife, particularly injured and orphaned birds of prey. "I spent about three or four years volunteering at Wild at Heart. I started doing that work to give back, yet it was me that was given the gift. I was offered the opportunity to look into the eyes of pure wilderness, allowed into the private space that humans don't normally enter, and seen firsthand the beauty, strength, and magnificence of what birds of prey truly are."

Maria believes that these passions and experiences have profoundly influenced her work, infusing it with a higher level of creativity. "What you put out there comes back threefold," she reflects. "I have made so many friends through my Facebook website. It is an inspiration to me to come up with component designs that bring happiness and pleasure to them."

At SunStones of the Southwest, Maria's copper jewelry pieces reflect her deep connection to nature and her commitment to creating beauty through art. Her journey is a testament to the power of resilience, creativity, and the impact of giving back to the community.

We invite you to explore Maria’s stunning jewelry at SunStones of the Southwest and experience the artistry and passion that define her work. Join us in celebrating Maria's incredible journey and the unique beauty she brings to the world of metalworking.
