Celebrating the Artistry of Karen L. Cohen

This month, we’re thrilled to feature Karen L. Cohen, an exceptional artist with a fascinating journey from math teacher and computer scientist to master enamelist, beader, and Temari Ball maker. Karen's lifelong passion for art began in childhood, crafting alongside her mother and during summer camp, and has blossomed into a rich career in enameling spanning over 45 years.

Karen specializes in Cloisonné enameling, a technique that involves using fine silver or gold wires to create intricate designs. She’s drawn to this method for the mesmerizing luminosity achieved by layering transparent enamels over silver. But her talents don’t stop there—Karen explores a wide range of enameling techniques, such as high-fire and sugar-fired topcoats, building enamel designs with various supplements, and using decals on overfired white enamel. Each piece she creates has a unique story and stunning aesthetic, such as her captivating cat and black spindle images.

Not only does Karen excel in enameling, but she also enjoys working with colored pencils on copper, finding endless inspiration with the copper shapes from Twisted Turtle Studio. This technique allows her to infuse vivid colors and intricate designs into her creations, giving them a one-of-a-kind vibrancy.Since retiring from her career in computer science, Karen dedicates her time to teaching enameling and beading, sharing her vast knowledge and experience with budding artists. She frequently teaches at the John C. Campbell Folk School, guiding students through the beautiful art of enameling. Her dedication to teaching has inspired many to pursue this intricate craft.

Beyond teaching, Karen creates Studio Buttons for button collectors and crafts wall pieces, dolls, and jewelry. Her expertise is showcased in her book, "The Art of Fine Enameling," available on her website. Excitingly, she has a new book, "Enamel Buttons," set to release in December 2024, promising even more inspiration and insights into her remarkable work.
